MFW-15 TurboSS subwoofers -very limited availability
[MFW-Nat-LowQuarter-800]

The MFW-15 Turbo-SS is a completely assembled, ready to play subwoofer born of our new Turbo kit loaded in some new old stock cabinets we secured and re-finished from AV123's closing.  We currently have about 40 of these cabinets in stock.  I have custom fit a new SpeakerPower sourced amplifier to directly drop into the MFW-15's amplifier cutout.  SpeakerPower manufactures all of our amplifiers in southern California.

I'll continue to add more details to this post, but this well known design is again available to order and ship.  We have been able to utilize our very robust packing for SubMersives and F18s to allow safe shipping of these 115 lb subwoofers for $70-110 to most of the US.

The new, low profile amplifier utilizes a very potent, 700W ICEpower module and the same new input section as our SubMersive amplifiers.  The amplifier carries a 3 year warranty and is easily serviced long after that time.
[MFW-ICEamp-front]

[MFW-ICEamp-top]

We are finishing up the new, black cover panels for the enclosures pictured below.  These are the old AV123 "moho" finish but without the bright color saplines.  We have had our cabinet shop sand and clear coat these and black out the face recess and port.  They look rather sharp in person with the grain falling somewhere between a cherry and oak look.
These will be loaded with the custom built, low inductance, 43 lb MFW-15 Turbo woofer Sandbagger has been shipping with the turbo kits:

[Turbo-driver-2012-2]

We had our cabinet shop produce new black cover panels on their CNC for all of the cabinets we have on hand.  We upgrade the 4 screw mounting to large 3/8" flat head screws (the originals were not always square to the recess and grills held on loosely) allowing us to offer a magnetic grill like those we offer on our SubMersive and F18 subwoofers.  Here is the result which I believe looks and feels like a subwoofer well beyond the reduced price we are clearing these out for:

[MFW-Nat+grill-1-1200]
[MFW-Nat+grill-3-1200]

Based on the costs involved with the woofer used, full packing, US assembled amplifier, new cover panels, and new magnetic grill, the completed unit should be selling for $1395, even with the old stock cabinets.  For comparison, if I produced similarly attractive, new cabinets, I would sell these for around $1695.

Any still around past July 1st will sell with magnetic grill for $995 each + shipping, which is still a great deal on the performance and package.  Consider we have roughly double the capability of the original MFW-15, much smoother response, XLR/RCA inputs with auto-sensing and 12V trigger, 30-200Hz 24dB/oct crossover, LF EQ for room size and house curve adjustment, a delay control for front/rear subs, and a 3 year warranty.  Note most other vented 15" subs on the market are significantly larger, not tuned as low without plugging ports, or have very long lead times.

  • Frequency response: 16-200Hz +/-3dB
  • Dimensions are 18" wide x 24" tall x 22.5" deep
  • Optional magnetic grill adds $50 and 1/2" to depth
  • Included and removable rubber feet at 3/4" to height spikes can be upgraded using the M6 threaded inserts.

Pricing for the remaining units in stock:
  • MFW-15 Turbo SS with magnetic grill: $895 + shipping
  • 2x MFW-15 Turbo SS with magnetic grill: $1695 + shipping
  • Don't need grills?  -$50 each

It is very nice to now have some complete MFW-15 Turbo's rocking customer's homes as they should.[thumb]

I was very happy with the performance of the MFW-15 Turbo with the final tweaking to the amplifier settings.  You can really push on the sub without worry.  At some point if you keep pushing the volume ever higher, sound quality degrades from compression, but the sub is producing some significant output by that point.  As I've posted elsewhere, I would be very happy shipping a $1500 production subwoofer with this level of size and performance.

I took a few measurements while verifying the performance last weekend.  The response would be smoother above 40Hz if taken outdoors rather than in our warehouse, but aside from the 2 small bumps around 44Hz and 88Hz, these are very representative of the performance.  The numbers on the left are only useful in understanding that the graph shows 5dB/division.  These graphs have no correlation to maximum output capabilties.

Here is the base frequency response with crossover at maximum/bypass and LF EQ knob at 12 o'clock which fits +/-3dB ~16Hz out past 200Hz.
[Turbo-BaseResponse]
For those wondering what exactly the LF EQ knob does, here you can see the minimum in green, 0dB in white, and maximum in red.  This is where the 15Hz and 24Hz low frequency limits come from on the product ID label:
[Turbo-LF-Min-Max]
And finally here is the full range of curves filled in:
[Turbo-LF_EQ]
Let me state clearly, these measurements make no representation of maximum output.  These are all taken within the linear operation of the subwoofer.

Do you think that you will still have full kits including enclosure in January?

I believe that is a safe bet, but keep an eye here.  We have a few with some blemishes on corners and a few black units as well.

Awesome. [smile] Would the ones with blemishes and the black ones be any cheaper?

Considering the Turbo Kit sells for $800 / $850 with the cover plate, they won't go for less than that.  The initial release pricing is already almost as low as I can realistically go for what is being offered.  Black units will probably be $50 more as I have many more of the dark (meaning no bright sap-lines) Moho cabinets and the black required more prep work.

Makes perfect sense, I will definitely be jumping on two of the moho cabinets w/Turbo. Tax return money in January is going towards these. [smile]

Any chance of seeing a picture of those magnetic grills? [biggrin]

Also, do you have any with the dark sap lines?

Are you willing to sell just the driver, by any chance?

Still really curious as to how much just the driver would cost...

Hi Blake18,

I'd be willing to sell the driver for $400 which is the price of the Turbo kit less the sale price of the amplifier.

You currently have to send an e-mail to sales@seatonsound.net to place orders and/or get shipping quotes.

Would you be willing to help advise me on what EQ settings to use seeing as you guys had to program the Dayton and ICE amps to make the driver pair up well with the MFW-15 enclosure? I really want the drivers, but I just can't justify buying new amps as well, seeing as my iNuke 3000DSP is sufficient until I can afford the actual ICE amps. I would really appreciate the help.

was directed here from avsforum, they mentioned an upgrade.

I'm confused about the terminology.

I have a dead amp, but never had any issues with the woofer.

  • MFW-15 Turbo SS: $845 + shipping

Am I reading correctly, that's a complete speaker/amp/enclosure? Seems like I read that the upgrade package was driver+amp and was about that price.

Yes, you're reading correctly.

Per the various threads it's $800 for the new driver + amp, $400 for just the new amp, and $845 for new driver + amp + enclosure.  The $845 is a temporary promotion though.  Shipping of course is extra and will differ for each option.

was looking at 2 HSU VFT-MK2s but just read that the turbo MFW 15s were possibly available. How would dual HSUs compare against 2 MFWs? I have an original MFW with a dead amp in my basement, was a sad day when the humming started.

i sent an email as well. i have a dead mfw in my basement. id like 2 subs, so wondering if i should get 2 whole new turbo subs or one new one and a kit for my dead enclose. curious if there is any price benefit to either option. also want to know if th2 mfw's would out perform 2 hsu vft-mk2's, which i imagine would cost roughly the same.

They would have very similar performance. Although the MFW-15 Turbo driver and amp are of higher quality. I would go with the MFW-15 Turbos myself.

Hi guys,

As mentioned previously, our cabinet shop ran into some delays which pushed into their holiday break for annual inventory.  The complete units are waiting on the new cover panels and grill frames before we can ship, but all other items are here, with more amplifiers on their way.  We are able to safely ship these very reasonably at $75-105 to most of the US by just slightly re-fitting our new packaging for the F18 & HP.

All MFW-15 related e-mails have been marked and will be responded to by Thursday this week.  I don't want to be taking money until I have more confident shipping timelines.  While we do make just enough to make this worthwhile supporting, to keep prices down I want the amplifier, Turbo Kit and Turbo-SS subs to be as simple a process as possible.  Taking money too long before shipping creates the exact opposite of that situation. [wink]

Please don't worry about missing out on getting the upgrades.  We have custom metalwork on the shelf for 100pcs, and we'll order more well before we run through that stockpile.  It's been a few years since anyone had a drop in amplifier solution.  Waiting another week will insure everyone is happy with the result.

Unless you are changing what you want quoted or invoiced, please give us until next Thursday before following up.

Thank you again for all the interest.  It's great to see that many still have their MFW-15 subwoofers and are willing to make the investment to update, upgrade or bring them back to life.

One of the big advantages of the MFW-Turbo is a natural port tuning below 20Hz.  In most rooms you will see extension and strong output to 15-16Hz.  The VTF-15 Mk2 needs to plug one of the triangular ports to achieve similar low frequency extension as the MFW's design.  In such a comparison the MFW has a larger port and much more flaring to the port to keep port noise and compression down.

Hey Mark, I PM'd on both here and AVSForum. I will be buying two Turbo drivers this month, and am hoping you wouldn't mind advising me on where I should boost or lower the EQ in my iNuke 6000DPS that I will be powering them with. Could you please advise? [smile]

EDIT: OOPS! I just saw that you will respond by Thursday, my mistake! [smile] I'll wait patiently in the corner now. [tongue]
